Remote Sensing Methods for Surface Run-Off, Soil Moisture and Alien Invasive Species Control in African Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, Springer Japan (Springer Japan KK, part of Springer Nature), 2019 12 , 9784431542131, This book assesses the importance of the cultural dimensions of water management, which differ from one region of the world to another, from humid Southeast Asia to arid parts of the Middle East and Africa. Water is a vital resource, and water circulation brings invaluable benefits in many ways. Too much or too little water can also create disasters, however, including flooding and drought. Water is considered “too much to control” in humid areas and “too little to survive” in arid regions. There is a great storehouse of traditional and scientific knowledge on water management as an expression of culture in both arid and humid areas. The qanat, for example, is used in some arid regions to control the transport of water underground. In humid areas, people have long existed under the threat of heavy flooding by drawing upon traditional knowledge for survival. Once-effective water management is threatened, however, by climate change such as global warming and by the globalization and urbanization of society. Adaptive water management is now imperative as climate and society undergo changes. Not only political and institutional solutions are called for. As well, adaptations of traditional methods must be introduced into modern systems of water management. This book provides valuable guidance on how that synthesis can be achieved. The Applications and Analysis Methods for Remote Sensing, Buho Hoshino, Chapter 10-3, NTS, 2019 08 , 9784860436124, Remote Sensing & GIS Application to Agriculture, Buho Hoshino, 1-page spatial report, Dairy Journal, 2016 08 内モンゴルを知るための60章, Buho Hoshino, Dust storm and desertification of Inner Mongolian Rangeland, Aka-Ishi Press, 2015 07 On the Helminth Fauna of small mammals in Hustai National Park, Mongolia, S. Forest dieback phenomenon in Hustai National Park, Mongolia based on remotely sensed data, Buho Hoshino, 8th Biennial Conference of the International Biogeography Society, the International Biogeography Society, This study we approached the dieback phenomenon of the Betula platyphylla Suk. forest in Hustai National Park in Mongolian using remotely sensed data. Recently the significant growth reduction in semi-arid pine forest, why? Our approaches including such as a rapider warming in dryer region; more evaporation; less available soil water; growth reduction and more frequent drought or long drought are major driving forces. But in our study region, we have chronic forest dieback, likely because in winter the temperature is < 0 0C and water storage in winter benefits tree growth. Early spring warming could exhaust this water storage. It is therefore hypothesized that early spring temperature is most crucial for tree growth. Rising temperature in spring overly evaporates winter water storage and leads to more frequent drought events in early spring. Frequency of spring drought in 1990s is 2.6 times of the average for the last century as a whole, explaining the most recent forest dieback. Remaining of this trend in the future will lead to more serious forest dieback and even vanishing of the semi-arid forests. Soil moisture is higher in deciduous broadleaved forest than in coniferous forest; Water consuming is more in deciduous broadleaved forest than in coniferous forest during the growing season. The 'Grain for Green' project tries for ecological recovery of the upper reaches of the Huang-He and the Yangtze River, by prohibition of grazing and transformation of cultivated fields in steep slopes into afforested areas. This project aims at not only ecological recovery but also rural economic development, because improvement of peasant economy is regarded as a key for future sustainability of the forests. The authors used remote sensing analysis to examine the extent of ecological recovery after the onset of the project on the one hand, and conducted intensive field research in Beisongta Village, Ansai, Shanxi to investigate the extent of change of traditional land use and subsistence economy on the other hand. The result of remote sensing analysis showed marked recovery of land cover, that indicates the effect of afforestation and the prohibition of grazing. Though peasant subsistence economy were greatly affected by the prohibition of sheep and goats grazing and decrease of cultivated land, hothouse cultivation which started at the same time as the project, seems to make up for them so far. 28, (28) 20 - 22, 2009 Traditional land use in Loess Plateau (China) and the 'Grain-for-Green' project : A case from Ansai Province, Shanxi, Sato Ren'ya; Nawata Hiroshi; Buhe Aosier; Nagasawa Ryota; Jia Ruichen; Zhang Wenhui; Hou Qingchun; Yamanaka Norikazu, Bulletin of the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies, Kyushu University, 14, 2008 , The purpose of this paper is to examine effects and problems of the 'Grain for Green' project of China, which progressed halfway through the onset, from the viewpoints both of ecological recovery and of changes in land use as well as rural subsistence economy.

The 2014-2016 JSPS “Asia-Africa Science Platform on Asian dust and environmental regime shift” was applied for an international observation of the Asian dust from the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Grassland to Japan. A lidar network observation in the Gobi Desert showed a transport of the Asian dust from the atmospheric boundary layer to the free troposphere by a cold frontal system, moving across the desert. A new approach to investigate the Asian dust as bioaerosols was employed. A gene analysis of the bioaerosols showed that the Asian dust is a significant vehicle for long‐range transport of microorganisms. An evidence of the environmental regime shift was found in the Mongolian Grassland. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), A Model Analysis for the Regime Shift under climate change, 201504, 201903, YABUKI TETSUO; Hara Toshihiko; Tanaka Shigenori; Ebina Kuniyoshi; Tanaka Ayumi, To propose how to recover already degraded alpine vegetation through the regime shift under climate change especially global warming, we have performed model analyzing based on the state structure quantitative analysis in terms of several dimensionless parameters, referring to field measurement data and recovery experiment data in our research field. It has been found that the plausible values of the parameters in our model can explain the degraded alpine vegetation in our field as a regime shift, and the initial soil water content increased by cutting dwarf bamboo on the ground can recover the favorable stable state structure, and as a result our degraded alpine vegetation can be recovered within a reasonable value of dimensionless parameters in our model. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Tree ring width, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses for ecosystem change, 201404, 201803, Sugimoto Atsuko, Analyses lines were developed for tree ring oxygen and nitrogen isotopes. Carbon, oxygen and nitrogen isotopes were analyzed for tree ring samples obtained from taiga at north Mongolia. Carbon and oxygen isotopes showed similar trend, with higher values under dryer conditions. Higher nitrogen was observed for tree ring at grassland boundary than that at forest site. Nitrogen isotope was also observed for 5-year period, and no clear correlations with temperature and precipitation fluctuations were observed. These tree ring nitrogen isotopes at forest site and grassland boundary showed different trends, and suggested nitrogen dynamics at each ecosystem. Growth of larch trees at grassland boundary seem to be limited due to a dry condition, however sufficient right and nitrogen conditions may contribute the growth of trees. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), A Re-Evaluation of the Use of Large Domestic Animals in Central Asia: Focusing on Changes in Camel Breeding, 201404, 201703, IMAMURA Kaoru; Nurtazin Sabir; Azim Baibagyssov, Camels are well adapted to dry climates. We focused primarily on camels reared in Kazakhstan, conducting a diversified examination of such topics as the ecological characteristics of camels, their economic value, and their origins, and the history of their hybrids. There are two types of domestic camels found spread across the globe; the Bactrian camel and the dromedary. Although they are different species, in Kazakhstan crossbreeding of the two has been carried out since long ago for various purposes. Recent years has seen the increased popularity of a hybrid between the Arabian camel, with its higher volume of milk.
It is in this context that research is proceeding forward, not only with investigations into what their DNA, ecology and behavior tell us about the peculiar characteristics of camels as animals, but also at the same time into how human beings have used camels of the ages, considering the history and current state of this interaction. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Bioaerosol time-space transition during Asian dust transport incorporating cloud physics process, 201304, 201703, BABA KENJI, We investigated the spatio-temporal variation of bioaerosol occurred in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. The asian dust which occurred in the Mongolian Gobi desert arrived in Hokkaido area through the Westerly Wind without spreading in the meridian direction, according to meteorological model. We were also able to confirm occurrence / transport of Asian dust from LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging, Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging) and artificial satellites CALIPSO. From aerosol samples acquired in Mongolian Gobi desert and Sapporo, they were biologically identified between them. Ahmed, The invasion of mesquite (Prosopis spp.) has not only changed regional ecosystems, but has also led to livelihood degradation in local communities.
The Japanese-Sudanese interdisciplinary research teams developed comprehensive measures to control this invasive species. Hydrologists, plant physiologists, weed scientists, remote-sensing specialists, range managers, agricultural economists, nutrient physiologists, and cultural anthropologists worked together in field surveys at riverbanks, wadi beds, seashores and mountainsides in arid to semi-arid areas of Sudan.
The results of the study were applied as a training course on mesquite management and utilization for outreach workers of local state government. The results were immediately presented at an international conference and published in an academic book. In Sudan, observation wells were constructed at several mesquite bushes. Corresponding to solar radiation, water uptake by mesquite was observed. Decline of groundwater table due to the midday depression was indicated around the noon time. The root length was 10 times of the height of shrub. A numerical simulation model for groundwater uptake was developed. Experiments on germination were conducted at Arid Land Research Center and rapid root extension was observed (2 cm/day). Analysis of mesquite spread covering area by remote sensing indicated that high density of mesquite depends on specific soil moisture range region. The mesquite spread can be simulated by a biological spreading simulation model. Existence of groundwater is apparently significant for intrusion and spread of mesquite. One is the Saharan dust and the other is the Asian dust. The dust influences the global and local climates through the processes of radiation and cloud micro-physics. The present study carried out a comparative study of Asian and Saharan dusts by using in situ observations, space lidar, and numerical models. The result suggests that the Asian dust has more ability of forming ice nuclei than the Saharan dust. The animal was the pre modern most important power for men to exploit. The value of domesticated animals was not limited to the production of protein resources. As an excellent way of transport, it has contributed to the formation of long distant trade making its network and city civilization; as that of war and political domination, it supported the formation of Great Empires. Thus a global civilization was established in the inner dry land where distant regions and peoples communicate and exchange together, while 4 kinds of typology can be classified: 1. Northern prairie, 2. Tropical desert, 3. Oasis, 4. Tropical savanna. The destruction was however its modern history because Western modern history was that of ocean centered civilization and fossil energy. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Climate change impacts on the dynamics of alpine plant communities and clarification of its mechanisms, 2009, 2011, KUDO Gaku; KANEKO Masami; H0SHIN0 Buho; YABUKI Tetsuo, We aimed to evaluate the climate change impacts on the vegetation dynamics in alpine ecosystem and to clarify the changing mechanisms. Expansion of dwarf bamboo and drought stress caused the rapid decrease in species diversity and declining alpine vegetation. We developed new methods to quantify the vegetation changes using air-photographs and to evaluate the changes in soil moisture conditions using remote sensing data. Furthermore, we developed theoretical model to predict a drastic vegetation change caused by climate change. For the first time in world practice, nine (9) female Tibetan antelope were captured, fitted with satellite-based ARGOS platform transmitter terminal (PTT) and tracked distantly. Distant tracking and on-site field observations showed that the migrating Tibetan antelope mostly used a relatively small (200 meters in size) underpass Wu-Bei (N35°15′; E93°09′; altitude 4597 m) and also an underpass at the river Chumaru (a total of 33 under and overpasses are exists along the railroad). Satellite tracking of the migrating Tibetan antelope was successful; all tracked individuals area used breeding site in surrounds of the lake Huiten (or Zhuonai Lake) that is located in the National Reservation of Cococili (4900 m~5100 m above sea level). The satellite data are clearly showed exact locations of summer (calving), intermediate and winter pastures; and also provided data on the Tibetan antelope temporaldistribution pattern. A preliminary analysis of the obtained data showed that summer habitat selection is closely associated with conditions of pastures that are also could be obtained from the satellites. This is very important to know the mechanism that is driving such migrations. During the study period numerous data on distribution, morphology, feeding habits, parasites in relations to the railroad of small mammals and birds that live along the railway have been obtained. The Tarim red deer inhabits in the river valley of the Tarim, Konqi and Qarqan rivers in Xinjiang, China. Currently, the habitat of the Tarim red deer is an area of intensive human activities, therefore the deer populations isolated into three areas, namely Xayar, Lopnur and Qarqan. Even more with the habitat's decreasing, not only the subspecies lost it's genetic diversity but also the animals are in severe danger because of genetic drifting and close relative reproduction. So far, the protective measure that has been sufficiently effective, and the ecology and genetic features of this subspecies remain to be elucidated. For that, some effective measures must be taken at present.
Mammals of the Palearctic have evolved in the region from western Tibetan Plateau to Xinjiang of China. Severe changes in the natural environments of the Cenozoic era gradually formed the present zoogeographical and ecological features in Xiljiang. Seven orders, 23 families, and 136 species of mammals are distributed over Xinjiang's complex environment. However. because influences via human activities have resulted in decreasing and fragmentation of habitats of the mammals, conservation and management for endangered species together with natural environments are urgently needed. It is very important to conserve and manage wild animals, and recover habitat environments, based on the biological data.
We used the optimum index factor (OIF) technique to rank all three-band combinations of ASTER original 14-band data over Tarim River Poplar Protection Area. Our study indicates that RGB color overlay using atmospheric corrected ASTER original bands 2, 3 (VNIR), and 6 (SWIR) has the highest OIF. When NDVI is considered as one ASTER band, highest OIF will have by carrying out bands 3 (VNIR), 4 (SWIR), and NDVI. In this study, we used highest OIF (bands 3, 4, and NDVI) succeeded in extraction of tarim River Poplar Forest.

The Cultures of Water Management (eBook, Editors Hiroshi Nawata Makoto Taniguchi), Buho Hoshino; Hiroshi Nawata; Abdelaziz Karamalla Gaiballa; Kiyotsugu Yoda; Hiroshi Yasuda, Chapter 14;: 14. |

Studies on the Betula platyphylla Suk. |

Land-use change and rural economy under the 'Grain for Green' project in Loess Plateau, China:A case from Ansai, Shanxi Province, Sato Ren'ya; Nawata Hiroshi; Jia Ruichen; Aosier Buhe; Nagasawa Ryota; Zhang Wenhui; Hou Qingchun; Yamanaka Norikazu, Proceedings of the General Meeting of the Association of Japanese Geographers, 2009, (0) 113 - 113, 2009 , The purpose of this paper is to examine effects and problems of the 'Grain for Green' project of China, which progressed halfway through the onset, from the viewpoints both of ecological recovery and of changes in land use as well as rural subsistence economy. |

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), A study of dromedary camel management practices striking a balance between conservation of the mangrove forests and improvement of local communities' livelihoods, 202107, 202403, |

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), International Observation of Asian Dust and Environmental Regime shift over the Source Regions, 201604, 201903, Kai Kenji, In recent years, international environmental problems occur due to the Asian dust, which is potentially affected by microorganisms and air pollutants, to be transported long distances. |

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), A Study of Integrated Management Methods of Alien Invasive Species Mesquite in Arid Lands of West Asia and Africa, 201304, 201603, NAWATA HIROSHI; ELBASIT M. |
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Relationship between the exclusive invasion of alien vegetation, mesquite and heterogeneity of sub-surface zone in arid environment, 201104, 201603, Yasuda Hiroshi; NAKAGAWA Kei; HOSHINO Buho; NAWATA Hiroshi; YODA Kiyotsugu; SAITO Tadaomi; NISHIYAMA Koji; TSUJI Wataru; KAWAI Takayuki; ISHIYAMA Shun; Mohamed Abd Elbasit Mohamed Ahmed, Field survey in Sudan and analysis in Japan have been performed since 2011. |
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Comparative study of Asian and Saharan dusts - estimation of the dust flux and influence to the climate, 201204, 201503, KAI Kenji; HOSHINO Buho; TAKEMI Tetsuya, There are two major dusts in the world. |
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S), Historico-Ecological Studies of Afro-Eurasian Inner Dry Land Civilizations and their Modern Changes from the View Point of Pastoralism, 200905, 201403, SHIMADA Yoshihito; SAKATA Takashi; TAKAKI Keiko; IKEYA Kazunobu; IMAMURA Kaoru; OHNO Akira; NAWATA Hiroshi; OUSBY Sacko; HOSHINO Buhou; HIRATA Masahiro; KODAMA Kanako; ISHIYAMA Syun; NAKAMURA Ryo, For rethinking the human civilization history, we have evaluated the Afro-Eurasian Inner dry land Civilization as its basic and main stream before the modern time from a pastoralist point of view. |

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Influence of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway on seasonal migration of Tibetan animals, 2007, 2010, HOSHINO Buho; MOTOKAWA Masaharu; SUZUKI Masatsugu; OHTAISHI Noriyuki; MASUDA Ryuichi; KAJI Koichi; KANEKO Masami; TAKEDA Masaya; ASAKAWA Mitsuhiko; KAMEYAMA Satoshi; YOSHIDA Tsuyoshi; IGOTA Hiromasa; JIANG Zhaowen; WU Xiaomin; LIU Chuguang; HALIK Mahmut; CUI Qinghu; ANIWAR T.; SU J.P.; HE Huamin; CHEN Shilong; SUMIYA Ganzorig, In this study, the hindering factor of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway, that is linking the Lhasa (Tibet) and Golmud of Qinghai Province since July 2006, on the migration of the Tibetan antelope-Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) and other wild animals, inhabitants of the Tibetan Plateau is investigated. |
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Surveillance of the change of ecosystem on the Uotsuri-jima in Senkaku Islands with goats, using high-resolution satellite images, 2007, 2008, YOKOHATA Yasushi; KANEKO Masami; YOKOTA Masatsugu; HOSHINO Buho, 航空写真(1978年)および高解像度人工衛星イコノス(2000年)、Quickbird(2004、2006年)およびALOS(2007年)の衛星画像を分析した。 |
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Conservation biology for establishment a sanctuary for deer of an endangered species ; Tarim Red Deer and Thorold's Deer, 2003, 2006, OHTAISHI Noriyuki; KANEKO Masami; SUZUKI Masatsugl; BUHE Aosier; KAJI Kouichi; TAKEDA Masaya, Tarim red deer (Cervus elaphus yarkandensis) is a special subspecies belong to Western system which is wondrously adapted to desert habitat. |
