We have performed the following studies by using simultaneous measurements of rheology/small-angle X-ray scattering(rheo-SAXS)and simultaneous measurements of rheology/small-angle light scattering(rheo-SALS) for a nonionic surfactant (C14E5)/water system. (1) Development of a double cylinder cell which can be used both for SAXS and SALS. (2) Determination of a temperature-shear rate diagram and elucidation of three-dimensional structures of the onion phase with a long-range orientational order. (3) Determination of the intermediate structure between lamellar and onion phases formed in the low-shear rate region.

In this study, we have found for the first time that there exist both upper and lower limits for the temperature range of onion formation and that only one of them has been observed so far. We have also derived an expression of the elastic energy for the polyhedral onions to explain the existence of these upper and lower temperature limits. Furthermore, we have found that the change in the orientation of lamellae follows the same path in all the four kinds of transition processes, i.e., the lamellar-to-onion and onion-to-lamellar transitions near the upper and lower temperature limits.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Morphology of lamellar domain structure in a surfactant aqueous solution, 2009, 2011, KAWABATA Youhei, In a nonionic surfactant aqueous solution, we have investigated the morphology and the formation mechanism of the giant lamellar structures which are formed with crystallization of the hydrophobic group of a surfactant molecule inμm scale, by means of optical microscope, X-ray diffraction and light scattering. We have found that the structure of hydrophilic parts of a surfactant molecule contributes to the formation of the domain morphologies, and that a relatively stable disk-like domain in the case of large head area of the surfactant gradually becomes spherical vesicles because of the unstable structure of its edge part.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Dynamics of Shear-Induced Structural Transition in Ordered Lyotropic Systems, 2006, 2010, KATO Tadashi; KOMURA Shigeyuki; KAWABATA Youhei; FUJII Masatoshi, Although it has been known that the shear flow induces structural transition in the lyotropic phase (self-assemblies with a long-range order) composed of amphiphiles, the transition mechanism remains still unclear. In this study, we have focused on the transformation of the surfactant lamellar phase into the onion phase where the multilamellar vesicles are close-packed. We have found for the first time the lamellar→onion and lamellar→onion→lamellar transition with increasing temperature under shear flow.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Effects of Shear Flow on the Structures of Lamellar Liquid Crystals and Slow Dynamics, 2003, 2005, KATO Tadashi; KOMURA Shigeyuki; FUJII Masatoshi; KAWABATA Youhei, In the past 10 years, much attention has been paid to the effects of shear flow on the structure of a lamellar phase. In the present study, we have measured small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, small-angle light scattering, and shear stress on the lamellar phases of a nonionic surfactant C_nH_<2n+1>(OC_2H_4)_mOH (C_nE_m) in D_2O under shear flow. We have found discontinuous decrease in the lamellar spacing for the shear rate of 0.3-1 s^<-1> suggesting local phase separation into concentrated lamellar and water-rich regions. We have also tried to clarify the mechanism of the local phase separation. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. Construction of an apparatus We have constructed an apparatus for small-angle light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements under shear flow to investigate structural change in μm scale and nm scale, respectively. 2. Time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and light scattering (SALS) under shear Time evolutions of 2-dimensionl SANS and SALS patterns have been observed after applying shear flow with a constant shear rate. The SANS results indicate discontinuous decrease in the repeat distance a few hours after applying shear flow in the range of shear rate 0.3-3s^<-1>, suggesting some sort of transition. It has been found that the repeat distance in the steady state takes a minimum around 1s^<-1>. From the SALS measurements, on the other hand, structural change in μm scale occurs a few minutes after applying shear flow. The decrease in the repeat distance may be induced by such a structural change in μm scale. At the shear rate of 3s^<-1>, a scattering pattern suggesting formation of the onion phase has been observed. 3. Measurements of shear stress Time evolution of the shear stress has been recorded after applying shear flow with a constant shear rate. In the lower range of shear rte, the shear stress in the steady state increases with increasing shear rate. As the shear rate exceeds about 1s^<-1>, the shear stress decreases with shear rate, supporting the SANS results.
