Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Evaluation method of ecosystem resilience function in low deer density process after culling, 20160401, 20200331, Kaji Koichi, In areas where vegetation has declined due to overbrowsing, high deer density is maintained depending on fallen leaves. Chronic overbrowsing reduces the number of species in the seed bank faster than ground vegetation and negatively affects the function of nutrient cycling and seed dispersal through changes in the food habits of dung beetles during larvae. On the other hand, the low deer density resulted in the increase in deer body mass and fertility, the negative direct effect of deer feeding on sapling renewal and the positive indirect effect through reduction of sasa coverage, and the increase in the forest floor vegetation coverage and a decrease in soil erosion. In addition, it was clarified that the position at the watershed scale of the deer fence installation site affected vegetation cover and invasion, and the light conditions affected on persistence of seed banks.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Rethinking private ownership for conservation of natural resources with emphasis on wildlife, 20140401, 20180331, Takahashi Mitsuhiko; OGATA Kenichi; IGOTA Hiromasa; Hayashi Yuko; KOHYAMA Satomi; NAKAMURA Shingo; HATAKEYAMA Takemichi; UEDA Gohei; KUSAKARI Hidenori; Charlton Guy C., Private ownership needs to be critically analyzed to enable natural resources management. Through research of hunters, we found hunters do not regard landowner's permission are necessary for hunting and culling; however, decline of rural norms and increase of absent ownership complicates the issue. Although Japanese statutes do not provide for "hunting rights," exclusiveness of hunting grounds are customary observed. Considering the role of hunting in wildlife management, it is now necessary to reconsider relation between natural resources management and private land ownership. Not only landownership but wide variety of legal aspects and rights surrounding natural resources management must also be analyzed. They include managers, management devices, as well as rights towards the resources itself.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Proposal for wildlife damage monitoring and management to prevent hollowing-out of rural society, 20150401, 20170331, Suzuki Masatsugu; ASANO Makoto; MATSUURA Yukiko, Since the population increase and the distribution expansion of deer and wild boar are continuing nationwide, the clarification of the long-term and community-rooted wildlife management vision are indispensable. Capture for nuisance control and population control are mainly conducted by recreational hunters. To solve these problems, the making of system to support local flexible governance may be effective. In addition, an effect is expected in the selective introduction of the wildlife management systems used in Europe and North America.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Determine the insular process and mechanism of sika deer based on ecology, morphology and genetic information, 20140401, 20160331, Kaji Koichi; YOSHIDA TSUYOSHI; KUBO MUGINO; IGOTA HIROMASA; NAGATA JUNCO; UENO MAYUMI, To clarify the processes and mechanisms behind insular evolution of sika deer, we surveyed chronological change in life history, morphology and genetics of an introduced island population. Under resource limitation, the female sika deer exhibited delayed sexual maturity from yearlings to 3 years old and lower body mass when population density increased. After population reduction, the first age of pregnancy was advanced from 3 years old to 2 years old and body mass of adult female increased. Corresponding to changes in food, molar wear rate became faster after the first population crash. The size of molar dentition once decreased, however, increased thereafter. Effective population size as well as genetic diversity had once decreased, however, thereafter stabilized and increased, respectively. Theses results suggest the possibility of positive natural selection for morphology and genetics in the insular sika deer under resource limitation.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Environmental Study for Developing Defense Systems in Urban Areas against Expansion of Wildlife, 20130401, 20160331, TAGUCHI HIROMI; TAKAHASHI A. Mitsuhiko; IKEDA Tohru; IGOTA Hiromasa; SASAKI Shiro; KITOU Syuichi; MIURA Shingo; YOKOHARI Makoto; EBIHARA Ippei, In urban areas of Japan (Sapporo, Sendai, Uozu, Toyama, etc.) and abroad (Nairobi, Milwaukee, Iowa City, etc.), problems related to large wild mammals are increasing. These cities are under pressure to cope with the wildlife. Governments, local and national, are only engaging in damage control and cannot foresee fundamental solutions. To operate wildlife control smoothly, agencies needs to collaborate with specialists and the local community, which could range from urban residents, as in Japan and the United States, to ethnic communities as in the case of Nairobi. In Kenya, the national wildlife agency is moving to delegate its powers to local communities. Our research suggests that in many jurisdictions, private land ownership has become stronger and thus complicating the task of agencies to control wildlife in the field. Wildlife control methods are also compelled to adjust to the opinions of urbanites which often are at odds with traditional wildlife management.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Habitat use of Sika deer in urban farmlands, 2011, 2013, YOSHIDA Tsuyoshi; KANEKO Masami; IGOTA Hiromasa, Population of Sika deer in grasslands of Sapporo Metropolitan Area was studied by road census. Sika deer population has been upward rising recent years. Also, our telemetry studies, with 4 Sika deer, indicated that urban deer in Sapporo area were short-distance migrants. Daily activities in grasslands ware most pronounced during summer season, were composed of nocturnal habitat transitions.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Feedback effects of long term resource limitation on life history trait of sika deer, 2009, 2012, KAJI Koichi; TAKAHASHI Hiroshi; YOSIDA Tsuyoshi; MIYAKI Masami; SUZUKI Masatsugu; SAITOH Takashi; MATSUDA Hiroyuki; IGOTA Hiromasa; MATSUURA Yukiko; UENO Mayumi, Sika deer on Nakanoshima Island showed repeated the irruptionwhich imposed irreversible change on the vegetation. Thereafter high deer density (45-59 deer/km^2) was maintained by fallen leaves, which was an important food in all seasons, during 2008-2012. The nutrient value of fallen leaves was lower than dwarf bamboos, however, was important alternative resources which enable to maintain life and bodymass.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Improvement in the system of deer meat hygiene control to meet the global standards, 2010, 2011, MATSUURA Yukiko; IGOTA Hiromasa; OKAMOTO Masayo, In Japan, a lack of a legal framework for deer meat hygiene control became a problem, when promoting deer meat consumption. In this study, at first, we gathered information on EU food hygiene regulations relating to deer as an advanced case. Furthermore, we assessed contamination levels of the carcass gralloched in the field. Gralloching in the field is allowed in EU with the object of avoiding contamination. In the result, the carcasses gralloched in the field showed as hygienic quality as that gralloched in a larder. EU food hygiene regulations require game meat inspection by a "trained person", who has sufficient knowledge to judge the carcass fit for human consumption. The meat inspection and "trained person" system will be useful also in Japan.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Influence of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway on seasonal migration of Tibetan animals, 2007, 2010, HOSHINO Buho; MOTOKAWA Masaharu; SUZUKI Masatsugu; OHTAISHI Noriyuki; MASUDA Ryuichi; KAJI Koichi; KANEKO Masami; TAKEDA Masaya; ASAKAWA Mitsuhiko; KAMEYAMA Satoshi; YOSHIDA Tsuyoshi; IGOTA Hiromasa; JIANG Zhaowen; WU Xiaomin; LIU Chuguang; HALIK Mahmut; CUI Qinghu; ANIWAR T.; SU J.P.; HE Huamin; CHEN Shilong; SUMIYA Ganzorig, In this study, the hindering factor of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway, that is linking the Lhasa (Tibet) and Golmud of Qinghai Province since July 2006, on the migration of the Tibetan antelope-Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) and other wild animals, inhabitants of the Tibetan Plateau is investigated. For the first time in world practice, nine (9) female Tibetan antelope were captured, fitted with satellite-based ARGOS platform transmitter terminal (PTT) and tracked distantly. Distant tracking and on-site field observations showed that the migrating Tibetan antelope mostly used a relatively small (200 meters in size) underpass Wu-Bei (N35°15′; E93°09′; altitude 4597 m) and also an underpass at the river Chumaru (a total of 33 under and overpasses are exists along the railroad). Satellite tracking of the migrating Tibetan antelope was successful; all tracked individuals area used breeding site in surrounds of the lake Huiten (or Zhuonai Lake) that is located in the National Reservation of Cococili (4900 m~5100 m above sea level). The satellite data are clearly showed exact locations of summer (calving), intermediate and winter pastures; and also provided data on the Tibetan antelope temporaldistribution pattern. A preliminary analysis of the obtained data showed that summer habitat selection is closely associated with conditions of pastures that are also could be obtained from the satellites. This is very important to know the mechanism that is driving such migrations. During the study period numerous data on distribution, morphology, feeding habits, parasites in relations to the railroad of small mammals and birds that live along the railway have been obtained.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Is the regime of special hunting area effective for wildlife management system?, 2007, 2009, MATSUURA Yukiko; IGOTA Hiromasa; IGOTA Junpei, The objective is to assess the effectiveness of the regime of special hunting area (SHA) in Nishiokoppe village for wildlife management. The deer population in the SHA was considered as high quality population, which showed high pregnancy rate and large body size. However, the population size seemed to be getting larger and culling should be needed. It will be useful for the population control to divide the SHA into several fragments and set up the regional management goal in each unit.
