A 6-month-old Holstein heifer presented with hindlimb paralysis and astasia. Spinal injury was suspected from the spinal curvature and swelling from T13 to L2. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed a mass of 8 cm in diameter near the right kidney. Ultrasound-guided needle aspiration of the mass revealed pus containing Gram-positive cocci, and paravertebral body abscess was strongly suspected. Computed tomography examination revealed a vertebral fracture of L2. At necropsy, two abscesses were found on both sides of the spine from L1 to L5. These abscesses were fused near the vertebral body of L1 and L2 encapsulating the vertebral body. A pathologic fracture of L2 was confirmed, and a part of the bone was compressing the spinal cord.

Rib fractures in calves occur frequently at birth and are a possible cause of stillbirth. In this report, we describe a 4-day-old Holstein male calf diagnosed with rib fractures using thoracic ultrasonography during a farm visit. The calf was delivered with the assistance of a referring veterinarian due to dystocia. During our visit, the calf had severe respiratory failure with tachypnea and abnormal pulmonary sound, pyrexia, tachycardia, anorexia and right thoracic pain on palpation that was indicative of right rib fracture. Thoracic radiography showed complete fractures of the first and second right ribs. Thoracic ultrasonography revealed a cortical discontinuity called a "step sign" in the nine ribs （the first to ninth right ribs） with anechoic hematoma, suggesting the presence of both complete and incomplete rib fractures. The calf was transported to our university for further examination and euthanasia. Computed tomography and necropsy revealed complete and incomplete fractures of the right cranial ribs and a tracheal stenosis near the completely fractured ribs. Thus, on-site radiography was useful to detect complete fractures of the first two ribs but failed to detect incomplete fractures of the other seven ribs. On the contrary, ultrasonography was able to detect the incomplete rib fractures as well as the complete rib fractures. Thoracic ultrasonography may be a useful addition to the on-site diagnosis of rib fractures in calves.

Non-selective intra-arterial (I-A) chemotherapy of paclitaxel plus platinum combination was performed in two dogs with cancers of the nasal cavity, including undifferentiated (Case 1) and transitional (Case 2) carcinomas. The drug dosages were reduced to 25% to 35.5% of the typical doses for systemic chemotherapy, and they were perfused via common carotid arteries. Case 1 had marked regression of the cancer but survived for only 53 days after the therapy. Case 2 had partial remission for approximately 3 months and survived for 126 days. Adverse events of the chemotherapies were not induced in Case 1, but mild adverse events were seen in Case 2. Non-selective I-A chemotherapy in this report required easy and simple procedures and could be safely performed via a reduction of the dosages of the drugs. Although future research will address issues concerning the intervals, frequencies, and drug dosages, the I-A chemotherapy was suggested as being able to contribute to palliative remission in canine intranasal cancers.
